NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s largest mobile operator, unveils its new phones called SO-01A (or SO907i). Created by Sony Ericsson, seems this phone has both physical and virtual keypad - yeah meaning that it’s a touchscreen phone.

LG Launches LG-KC780 Slim 8 Megapixel Slider Phone, Available in November

Already mentioned in their previous LG KC910 announcement, LG announced today the launch of its LG-KC780, a slim 8 megapixel camera phone with special features that make it ideal for shooting portraits. The LG-KC780 has about the same thickness as Samsung Pixon at around 13.9 mm (it was previously announced as 13.7mm by LG), comes with a 2.4-inch display screen and a slider form factor phone body. A Schneider-Kreuznach certified lens is used with a maximum of 8 megapixel resolution and 1600 ISO.

Several of the LG-KC780’s smart technologies focus around the most expressive part of a person, the face. Face Detection automatically finds and focuses on people’s faces to allow photographers to take clearer pictures. Part of this feature relies on LG’s Smile Detection technology, which can recognize the angle of people’s mouths and adjust focus for faces. With Smile Shot enabled the camera automatically triggers the shutter when it determines that the subject is smiling. And with Beauty Mode users can remove spots and imperfections on people’s faces, making sure the faces appear bright and clear in photos. If an image is too bright, however, LG’s SmartLight setting automatically fixes it. A built-in Image Stabilizer ensures that pictures come out clear and sharp, even in shaky situations.

The LG-KC780 also calls their Bluetooth a Smart Bluetooth. The phone’s camera can be used as a webcam for use in online conversations. Unlike USB webcams, the phone’s camera connects to your PC through the Bluetooth connection. In addition, Smart Bluetooth makes it easier to send and read text messages, allowing them to be typed and viewed on the computer.

Google’s Android Could Signal a Tipping Point in Smartphones

If Google’s ambitions for its recently-launched Android smartphone operating system are fully realized, the new OS will represent a tipping point in attitudes towards the whole concept of a smartphone. This tectonic shift will affect consumers, handset manufacturers and, most critically, mobile network operators.

According to ABI Research director Kevin Burden, “If Android is to become the ubiquitous mobile phone platform that Google and the Open Handset Alliance hope it will be, it will be because operators and handset OEMs recognize the value to their own business models of using standard platforms, not because wireless subscribers clamor for feature-rich phones, much less an Android-based phone.”

The current smartphone market accounts for only 14% of worldwide handsets. That doesn’t help Google’s aspirations to have a platform used by a wide population to whom they can market their services. Google needs to convince handset manufacturers to replace the real-time operating systems that now power the majority of mobile phones. In the smartphone market of the future, users won’t always be aware of what they’re buying: they will buy simply because they’re in the market for a phone, not specifically a smartphone.

The challenge is to convince operators that having more phones in their lineups and more subscribers using those phones based on standardized operating systems is good for them. Standardization delivers easier manageability at the technical level and greater ease in marketing services to all their subscribers.

“The smartphone market has been moving in this direction for some time now,” Burden continues. “If Android is a success, it may be the tipping point that marks the start of a profound change in the smartphone market.”

ATT Now Offers New Sony Ericsson W760a Walkman Mobile Phone

AT&T and Sony Ericsson today announced the availability of the Sony Ericsson W760a Walkman phone - the first 3G Walkman phone in the U.S. The integrated accelerometer allows customers to shake or tilt the W760a to fast-forward to the next song or to simulate motion while playing video games. Dedicated A and B gaming buttons also allow customers extra control and interactivity.

Joining the popular W580 and recently launched W350 Sony Ericsson Walkman phones at AT&T, the W760a phone integrates the Walkman music player with the full suite of AT&T Mobile Music applications, including Napster Mobile, eMusic Mobile, Music ID and XM Radio.

Sony Ericsson working on a PSP phone, minus the Ericsson?

Look, we've heard our fair share of PSP phone rumors, and there's really no reason to trust this one any further than your average baseless musings, but if Marketing Week's "sources in Japan and Korea" can be trusted, Sony's PSP phone could be hitting shelves as soon as Christmas 2009.

What does seem clear to these shady sources is that Sony won't be forking over the PlayStation branding to its Sony Ericsson partnership, and instead will build its PSP phone all by its lonesome. Other "details" from "analysts" are slightly less legit-sounding, with some stating it would be "relatively easy" to work phone features into the PSP since it already includes WiFi. Um, ok. Still, reasonable or not, this is clearly a rumor that will never die -- until Sony builds the dang thing, in which case we can start talking up a sequel.

Every so often, a company with a hot ripoff on it hands will roll the dice and send its wares through the FCC approval process, look around while whistling innocently, and hope beyond hope that no one notices anything unusual about the goods. The latest sneaky little son of a gun comes courtesy of Ezze Mobile Tech, the creatively named "MEGA4" with quadband GSM, a touch display, TV-out, and Bluetooth. Screen off, the design reeks of Sony Ericsson's cues, but turn it on, and, well... you can pretty much tell where this is going. We guess it's nice to get a little taste of the buffoonery we'd be treated to if Apple and Sony were to merge, but with just GPRS data on board, a set of FCC documentation is about as close to the flavor as we want to get.

Treo 800w Training Material Leaked

Hands On with iPhone 2.0 - new changes abound like Spring cleaning

Engadget has gotten their hands on iPhone firmware version 2.0. Some of the new features include a scientific calculator when you turn your iPhone sideways with the calculator open and the previously announced Exchange support is as smooth as it should be.

There isn’t a contacts search function, although they proposed that it might be because they don’t have too terribly many contacts, so it might require a contact least of more length for that feature to kick in. There is also no two pane mail client (mail list in one, message in the other).

The app store was there though, even though all it did was error code out saying that it couldn’t connect. There were also a couple of button icon changes, including the calculator button and the iTunes Store button. Other than that, nothing really important to see here, I’m just really, really hoping that Firmware 2.0 lands on Hardware 2.0 with a new shiny 3G chipset, I know other users are pushing for a whole list of other new hardware features, and those would be nice, but just a new 3G chipset would make me happy.

Yes, yes, I know T-Mobile hasn’t launched its new 3G network yet. It makes sense that all the moving parts need to move forward and that does include prepping the handsets to go with the new network – including Samsung’s new SGH-T819.

One of the first handset to run on T-Mobile’s new 3G network is the Samsung SGH-T819. There’s nothing too exciting other than the new 1700MHz WCDMA band. Other than that, there’s a 1.3megapixel camera and support for dual-band GSM.

Looks just like the Apple Touch

I know that this thing Meizu calls M9 looks just like the Apple Touch; so there’s no need to tell me that twice. Up until now, all we’ve seen is some 3D rendering of the M9. Well here it is in living color – the first prototype.

From what I can see, it’ doesn’t have the metallic look and feel of the M8 MiniOne. Thank goodness – we don’t need another iPhone look-a-like right? It might be 2009 before we see this phone hit the shelves in China. There’s a slight chance the company will debut it at CES or perhaps even 3GSM at the latest.

ASUS M930W takes cues from the LG enV

It looks a lot like the LG enV or the Nokia E90, but its nothing like either of those. It flips open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard, a D-Pad, and a larger screen than the external one.

It runs Windows Mobile 6 Pro and has both 3G and WiFi connectivity option. The 3G comes in the HSDPA flavor and should keep things speedy. There is also a 3.2MP cam somewhere on the device, presumably on the back.

The internal screen opens up much like a laptop allowing you to set it at a 90 degree angle if you think you can type on the small keyboard like a computer, or open it up to the full 180 degrees for easy texting on the go. Also, a nice feature I haven’t seen anywhere else, you can make calls from the front of the phone, or you can still do the same from the internal keypad as there are call and end call buttons there as well. It will supposedly support up to 32GB of microSDHC storage and is set to be released in the first quarter of next year.

HTC Touch Dual launches with 3.5G

Samsung "Croix" come stateside

Apparently that rumor from not too long ago that Verizon and Vodafone had worked out a deal to bring the Croix stateside came to fruition. Technically its called the Samsung u940 but really its just a Croix converted to CDMA for use on Verizon’s network.

And, much like what was predicted, it didn’t happen until the hype from the Voyager died down. Anyways, I am just glad to see it coming our way with the 3MP camera, touch screen, and the sliding keyboard.

I want one, but I am holding out with my Helio Fin until I see what Helio and Apple come out with next year. All I know, is that Verizon is probably trying to get this thing out the door ASAP or they would have filed to have the images concealed, so we’ll probably get the announcement at CES or maybe sooner.

Limited Edition Ferrari Motorola Z8 dropped

Ferrari, a company less and less known for the consumer grade vehicles they make, and more and more for their prowess on a race track is releasing more and more products with their name and badging on them. Check out this Moto Z8 banana slider phone featuring their name, logos, and color scheme.

On top of all the outward appearance modifications you also get pre-registration to the official site of Ferrari, www.ferrariworld.com, a couple of videos from Ferrari, Ferrari wallpapers and ringtones, some online magazine subscriptions, and “The Bourn Identity” which I have no idea what that has to do with Ferrari. Enzo Ferrari truly did build an empire.

Technically this model has not officially been announced or released, but you should be able to get more info from Ferrari and Motorola stores some time in Q1 of next year. No official price is available at the moment either.

LG KH1800 a.k.a Orange phone

And surprisingly not due to it being on the French network. It’s called that because of the extreme amount of bright orange used on this slider phone.

Its 13.3mm and a slider, I want a slider that thin to hit stateside, I love sliders, but they are always so thick, I guess this one is the exception. It has MP3 playback, a dictionary, camera, and 3G thanks to WCDMA.

Sadly though it will never see the light of day stateside, its headed only to Korea’s KTF network and will cost you the equivalent of about $372 USD. Oh, in case you were wondering, there is no T-DMB in this phone.

Motorola's Linux-based Ming 2 in Q2

According to Bill Chen, General Manager of Motorola Taiwan's Mobile Device business, the second generation Linux-based Ming handset won't launch until Q2 of 2008. Not February as initially rumored. What's more, the handset will be introduced in high-end and entry-level configurations -- unfortunately, both are GSM/EDGE, not 3G capable. DigiTimes says that Inventec won the manufacturing contract of this MOTO Beijing designed handset. Given the unusual (for MOTO) use of a lower-case vowel in the name, there's a good chance this was never meant for Stateside consumption anyway. Too bad, eh?

Half Nokia, half HTC, all ripoff

As if the N73 wasn't already up for the "most knocked off cellphone of the century" award, here we have yet another rip that wasn't even so kind as to stick solely to the Nokia motif. Rather, the ZTC 8898 threw in a dash of HTC to flavor things up, and apparently, this unit can even handle its fair share of NES (SNES?) emulation. Specs wise, we're lookin' at a 2.5-inch external display (and a 2.8-incher on the inside), dual SIM card slots, built-in camera and a pair of janky speakers to boot. We understand that buying both of the handsets this thing mimics wouldn't be cheap, but seriously, don't do yourself the disservice of plunking down $189 on this.

Nokia's N96 spotted in the wild?

That, friends, is an N96. Or, at least we're led to believe so. Judging by five mysterious images that surfaced over at Mobile-Review, it appears that Nokia's N96 (which looks like a jazzed-up version of the N81, actually) has leaked out, and while no specifications are available, it looks as if this thing is packing a 5-megapixel camera (with the obligatory Carl Zeiss lens), a dual LED flash and a sexy black motif. Helio releases Mysto, Korean community comes first

Helio has gotten official with the slim, sexy Mysto slider -- a branded, CDMA rendition of the Ultra Edition 10.9 that should ultimately become the MVNO's top of the line handset just this side of the Ocean with a 2 megapixel camera, microSD expansion, and the now-typical GPS and EV-DO data. There's a catch, though; it turns out that Helio will start out by soft launching the phone through its "Helio powered by SK Telecom" division that caters directly to the Korean American market. A full-scale launch is planned for January, but we've been told that folks should be able to approach staffers at Helio's New York and Santa Monica stores with a nudge nudge, wink wink starting December 26 and get hooked up for $149 (even though no Mystos will be on display). Good luck, shoppers!

Nokia's N-Gage First Access delayed to 2008

We suppose it was just too good to be true, having a solid release window and target device for N-Gage, even if it was going to be merely in the form of a "First Access" test service. Nokia has been going over the service internally with about 1,000 testers, and has uncovered an "issue" that it needs to address, but wouldn't elaborate much further about the problem, other than that the games and service are supposedly working smoothly. That means Nokia won't be releasing First Access for N81 users this week as promised, but instead will wait until the new year to finally make its new push back into the gaming market. Don't worry Nokia, it's not like we've got anything else going on.

Firm brings SideShow to Windows Mobile, iPhone

Devices supporting Vista's SideShow functionality aren't exactly flowing like water yet (seriously, when's the last time you saw someone sporting a W5Fe?), though that's not necessarily for a lack of interest. The functionality's plenty cool, it's just not really an overnight job getting enough manufacturers on board to support the concept and transform the consumer electronics landscape into a Vista-interfacing armada of small screens. If you had to boil it all down to exactly two things Microsoft could do to take SideShow from an ultra-niche market to ubiquity, though, let's be honest: they'd have to be to add Windows Mobile and iPhone support. Indeed, official WinMo support is a standing rumor, but in the meantime you can grab Ikanos Consulting's Go Gadgets beta, which supports installation and control of SideShow gadgets over pretty much any form of mobile connectivity you can throw at it. Turns out these guys have been hard at work making a general HTML renderer for gadgets, too, and have specialized it to look snappy on mobile Safari -- hence the iPhone and iPod touch support. This one isn't quite ready for public consumption yet, but if WinMo's how you roll, you can sign up for the beta now.

It's been a tick since we saw the oh-so-snazzy RoverPC G5, and we must say, the RoverPC P6 cranks up the sexy by a few orders of magnitude. The Windows Mobile 6-based handset, which is sure to make those not in Russian mighty envious, sports a 300MHz Samsung 2442B processor, a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 resolution touchscreen, 64MB of RAM, 128MB of Flash ROM, a microSD expansion slot, Bluetooth, miniUSB, a 2-megapixel camera and a built-in media player to boot. Additionally, the phone checks in at just 15.1-millimeters thick, rocks a dark gray motif and touts tri-band GSM connectivity. Shiro readies trio of ho hum PMPs

We'll spare you the obvious here -- we're quite aware that Shiro's VJ (pictured) looks an awful lot like something else -- but nevertheless, the outfit is hoping that its forthcoming trio of portable media players can somehow get traction in the overly saturated market. The aforementioned VJ reportedly rocks a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 resolution display, up to 8GB of internal storage space, a microSD expansion slot, built-in microphone for voice recording, an FM radio, up to 20 hours of music playback (5 hours of video) and support for MP3, WMA, WAV, BMP and JPEG files. As for the MR, look for similar features in a smaller (2-inch display) package with a maximum capacity of 4GB, while the MD boasts an even tinier screen (1.8-inch) and a fair bit less battery life. Regrettably, no pricing details were mentioned, but we get the feeling Shiro will be saving those tidbits for CES.

Cowon's N3 player packs DMB, GPS, 7-inch touchscreen

Cowon has really been tossing out a lot of winners of late, and if this N3 is any indication, there seems to be no stopping the DAP manufacturer at this point. While the N3 doesn't look to be headed for US shores in the immediate future -- thanks to that pesky built-in DMB tuner -- it does seem to have all the codec goodies and design refinement of its older siblings. The player is a followup to the N2, with a 800 x 480 7-inch touchscreen, 600MHz Alchemy AU processor, dual SDHC slots (but no built-in memory), and GPS. Software is based on Windows CE 5.0. No word on price or release date, but hopefully we'll be finding out more next month at CES.

Palm Foleo: the exclusive first and final hands-on

The irony is so thick we're almost drowning in it, but we had to see this thing through to the end.

Back in 2005 we got a once in a lifetime scoop -- the Treo 700w -- that proved once and for all Palm was doing non-Palm OS devices. Then, earlier this year, we were there when Jeff Hawkins announced the ill-fated Foleo at D5. We got the first ever hands-on of the thing, and eventually wrote a letter to Palm which not only prompted a public response from CEO Ed Colligan, but that many attributed as a cause of the Foleo's death. And lucky us (we think?), we managed to snag one of the few Foleos ever produced.

We'll be writing a brief post-mortem review of the thing shortly, but for now just enjoy some images of the hardware and software -- and let us know if there's anything in particular about the Foleo you've just got to know!

Samsung's P720, F490 make their video debut

Samsung's new P720 and F490 handsets already made themselves known at a recent press event in the Ukraine but, given that we unfortunately couldn't make the trek there ourselves, we didn't exactly get that great a look at 'em. Now thanks to the folks at Mobile-Notes, however, we've got some better pics of each of the handsets, along with a video that shows them off from every angle (check it out after the break). In case you missed the original announcement, the P720 and F490 pack 3 and 5-megapixel cameras respectively, along with dual SIM card slots on the former and a 432 x 240 touchscreen on the former. Both will also be available in the first half of next year, with the F490 trickling out sometime in the first quarter for $600, and the P720 following in Q2 for $500.

Treo with Wi-Fi Getting Closer to Release

Last year, the CEO of Palm, Inc. committed to building Wi-Fi into future Treo models. Apparently Ed Colligan was referring to a model that was just beginning its development cycle, but it seems the debut of this model is fast approaching.

This detail is deeply buried in some of documents filed with the FCC related to the Centro getting its stamp of approval from this U.S. government agency.

An email that's part of Palm's filing lists four upcoming smartphones by their code-names: Gnome, Gryffon, Otto, and Zeppelin. There's a note next to the reference to Zeppelin that says "This device needs to be submitted to FCC because it has the co-locating WiFi and radio".

Is This the Treo 800w?

For quite some time there have been persistent rumors that Palm, Inc. is in the process of developing the Treo 800w, a Windows Mobile-based smartphone with Wi-Fi. The FCC filing gives no additional details on the Zeppelin, but it's possible it will turn out to be the code name for the 800w.

Due to limitation in this operating system, it's virtually impossible for there to be a Treo running Palm OS (a.k.a. Garnet OS) that includes Wi-Fi.

It's not known whether the Zeppelin/800w will run on GSM or CDMA networks, or if there will be versions for both.

Coming When?

As the emails were related to the Centro and mentioned the Zeppelin only in passing, they don't say anything about when this model will be released.

However, they do seem to indicate that this model had not yet been submitted to the FCC as of mid-July, but it was close. This means the Zeppelin could get FCC approval any day now.

This fits in with the rumored time-table for the Treo 800w, which is expected to debut in the first quarter of 2008. Also, it's been about 18 months since Colligan mentioned that a Treo with Wi-Fi was being developed, and that's a normal amount of time for a smartphone to go from concept to release.

In any case, most people would agree this device is long overdue; Wi-Fi is now a standard part of high-end smartphones, and its lack has been hurting Treo sales.

Other Models?

The three other code-names given in Palm's email are for Palm smartphones that are better known that the 800w.

The Gnome is the version of the Centro for GSM networks, while the Gryphon is the CDMA version. The Otto is the Treo 500w.

TOSHIBA Portégé G910 and G920

A recent FCC filing has publicized photos and many of the technical details of two upcoming devices by Toshiba, followups to the Portégé G900 Windows Mobile phone.
The G910 and G920 will drop their predecessor's sliding keyboard, replacing it with a clamshell design, which does not appear able to rotate for use in portrait mode.

The two devices are physically indistinguishable, and it's currently unclear what difference there is between them.

However, both will share the 3-inch, WVGA (800 by 480 pixel) screen that made the G900 notable, as well as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, dual cameras, 1320 mAh battery, and microSD card slot.

Despite the FCC filing, it's unlikely these devices will be formally released in the U.S.; they feature only tri-band 900/1800/1900 GSM, and single-band 3G, making them almost unusable in North America.

Europe and Asia, however, will likely get their hands on the new devices in the first quarter of next year, though no pricing data is available.
